Good News and Opportunities from February 5, 2007
- CJPME sends "Palestine: Peace not Apartheid" to 350 MPs and Senators. Jimmy Carter’s recent bestseller, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid has created shockwaves across North America. CJPME felt that there was a great opportunity to help Canadian policymakers strengthen their understanding of the dynamics at play in the Middle East. Many thanks to the dozens in Montreal and Ottawa who procured the books, and performed the mailing.
- Our folks are on the news! In recent weeks, both Tom Woodley and Mark Khoury have been interviewed for commentary on the Middle East. Tom was interviewed in late January by CTV National to comment on Peter MacKay’s visit to the Middle East. Mark was interviewed for a documentary to discuss media portrayal and reporting in the Middle East. The documentary will air on February 19th at 10:00 p.m. on Videotron channel 8.
- CJPME riding group meets Lucienne Robillard’s office. Shahla, Tali, Lesley, Soumaya, Eiman and Tom met with the senior assistant to Lucienne Robillard, MP for Westmount – Ville Marie. It was a relationship-building meeting, where CJPME and its material and work were introduced. Also, a number of questions were passed to Ms. Robillard relating to the principles underlying her foreign policy positions. Thanks especially to Shahla for driving things as “Riding Group Leader.” Other groups are also getting going. Let us know if you want to be part.
- Presentation at Entreaide Bois-de-Boulogne. Grace, Carole and Joseph were our representatives at a CJPME presentation to Entraide Bois-de-Boulogne. Grace introduced CJPME, while Carole presented the "Seven Myths" presentation to the crowd of about 60 people. The response was very positive, and many were happy to be put on CJPME’s email list.
- Excellent Meeting in Montreal on Jan. 27th. Special thanks to the members of CJPME’s “Connecting in Community” (CinC) team who hosted their first meeting in Montreal on January 27th. Many of the CinC team’s ideas were put into practice in this first meeting of the year. The meeting focused on the Jimmy Carter book, Palestine: Peace not Apartheid, but included a number of additional segments. Then, following the meeting, we presented the film, The Syrian Bride, with popcorn and soft drinks – like a night at the movies! Thanks to Rania, Zahia, Tom, Joseph, Nabil, Huda, Hala, Grace, Eiman, Caroline, and Carl.
- Second meeting in Ottawa attracts more than 60! It was very gratifying to see over 60 people at only our second monthly meeting in Ottawa. Special thanks to Jeff, Sharaf, Cam and Samah and the rest of our Ottawa members and friends who helped to make this meeting a success. The meeting focused first on a refugee family recently arrived from the Jordanian-Iraqi border; followed by a presentation on the Carter book. Special thanks to Mark, Zahia, Huda, Hala, Grace and Tom from Montreal who came to help out. Let’s keep the momentum.
- New R&A Deliverables. The Research and Analysis team is on a roll with the start of the year. At our recent meetings, we had copies of new materials, including a factsheet on the Carter book, and an analysis paper on Mutual Recognition. Several other factsheets are in the pipeline – keep a watch at our Website. Thanks to Shirine, Joseph, and the other individuals who are developing these materials.
- Congratulations to Carole Haddad for her nomination as NDP Candidate for Saint Laurent – Cartierville. Carole has been involved in CJPME from the very early days, and has played a key role in a number of our initiatives in the past. Thus, we heartily congratulate her on her nomination as NDP candidate on Tuesday, January 23rd. While CJPME is non-partisan, we encourage all of our members and adherents to get involved in the Canadian democracy according to their political preferences. Thus, it is with great pleasure that we congratulate Carole, and wish her all the best in the upcoming Federal election.
- Thanks to our many new members. We are so thankful to the many of you who have committed to supporting CJPME financially through your membership. Because of your membership contributions, CJPME is enabled to continue doing the great work that it does, whether through helping to inform Canadian politicians, or through direct humanitarian aid to the many dispossessed in the Middle East, or through the other initiatives which CJPME drives.
